EL ZOCO is not only a place to eat; it is a route through nature. The interior and exterior were designed around a forest sensation that stays with the guest from the entrance to the middle of the restaurant.
At the eastern entrance the guest walks into dense, charged planting, where broadleaf and tropical cover forms a living green wall. Halfway along that route stands one exceptional tree: a two-hundred-year-old olive, present as the beating heart of the space. A clearing for sitting and pausing was designed around it.
Moving on, the route opens into other forest conditions — from Fremontia simplex, whose plain, ordered stature reads as a different kind of forest, through to the eastern courtyard, which tells a four-season story. Maple and Persian ironwood change colour through the year and put the cycle of life on display; beside them, evergreens such as magnolia, olive and bay laurel, and seasonal flowering species such as Obelia, hold the balance between nature's permanence and its change.
Elsewhere something new waits at each turn: thirty-year-old Indian lilac trees, multi-headed decorative jasmine, palms, and dense masses of myrtle, each giving the space a character of its own.
What makes EL ZOCO particular is not a handful of specimen trees but the range of more than five hundred plant species used inside and out. Short to tall, dense to sparse, they were composed together so the planting reads as spontaneous forest growth.
The planting at EL ZOCO is less decoration than a sensory condition — one that takes the guest through the layers of a landscape: somewhere to breathe, to touch, and to be beside living things.
